Close to 200 people gathered at a Eugene church Monday to remember Charles O. "Charlie" Porter, the former congressman and firebrand activist whom one eulogist said "epitomized Eugene - friendly, offbeat, com- passionate."

A political maverick best known for waging a 33-year battle to have a Christian cross removed from publicly owned Skinner Butte, Porter died Jan. 1 at age 86 from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

The Harvard-educated lawyer served two terms in Congress, representing Oregon's 4th District from 1957 to 1961. His controversial stands included support for U.S. recognition of China and normalization of relations with Cuba, and opposition to U.S. support for Latin America strongmen.
