Springfield High School senior Kelly Brantley will be her team's most experienced rider when the Millers compete in their first Oregon High School Equestrian Teams competition this weekend at the Oregon Horse Center. Springfield, one of four new OHSET South Valley District teams along with Camas Valley, Myrtle Point and Reedsport, will join the competition with six freshmen and sophomores plus Brantley on a six-girl, one-boy team. Twenty-three Lane, Douglas, Coos and Curry county schools form the district, which schedules three-day competitions in Eugene each February, March and April. With more than 220 riders and 25 events, each meet lasts from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and ends by 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Brantley and all participants are allowed to enter five individual events in addition to team events. Some of her events are classified as gaming (barrel racing, figure eight and pole bending), while others are judged on showmanship (hunt seat and stock seat). Among the team events, Brantley, who has been riding for 10 years, will join teammates in team penning, in hand obstacle relay, Canadian flags and birangle.
