Benign growth hard to believe
Commissioner Faye Stewart and Dwight Coons' pro-growth guest viewpoint (Register-Guard, Jan. 22) embraces the notion that increased environmental destruction and degraded quality of life will not occur if human population continues to grow in Lane County. They imply that the Region 2050 plan for future development will protect wetlands, riparian zones, floodplains, rare habitat and steep slopes.
How can we believe this assertion when, even now, we see enormous support from certain planners and elected officials to construct the West Eugene Parkway through wetlands and rare habitat and give the green light to large, ill-conceived subdivisions in wetland areas of Veneta?
As for riparian and floodplain protections in Lane County, consider the recent location of PeaceHealth's new hospital in the floodway of the Mc- Kenzie River and recall the ill-fated house that, because of poor siting, teetered on the eroded bank of the river and required demolition. Along many Lane County rivers, streams and lakes, residential construction is fast supplanting the vegetation that secures the banks and provides habitat for wildlife.
The county Land Management Division regularly grants variances and exceptions to riparian setback requirements found in the law. This does not translate to the type of resource protection that Region 2050 proponents say we will enjoy with the "well planned" growth they envision....
