Cary-Grove assistant wrestling coach Gary Castino recalls a situation where he once produced a rubber band during a practice.

"I took the rubber band and held it out and asked what its purpose was like this," said Castino. "They said it serves no purpose like that. I told them the rubber band only serves a purpose when it's stretched and able to do its job. You have to look at your life that way. Take yourself out of a comfort zone and stretch yourself."

Cary-Grove senior wrestling star Troy Carlson is one of the wrestlers who now wears a rubber band on his arm.

And what a fitting symbol it is.

Carlson, who heads into this weekend's Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament with 129 career wins and a .782 career winning percentage, has worked his way back from a devastating knee injury that threatened his senior season. Carlson is 9-0 this year in FVC action at 160 pounds and has not lost a match in the league over the last two years.

Carlson, a state qualifier as a junior at 160, is in search of his third straight FVC title.

According to the FVC wrestling Web site, Carlson is attempting to become just the 16th wrestler...
