"My stock as a mom went up when I told my boys that I knew the man who writes the 'Collector Cars' column for the Daily Herald," Barbara Rozgonyi of Glen Ellyn told me at a recent gathering of the Independent Writers of Chicago, a professional association of which we both are members.

I was duly impressed that I have readers as young as Barbara's sons - 13-year-old Peter (P.D.) Svoboda and his 11-year-old brother Warren. And it pleased me to know that young men like P.D. and Warren may one day buy their own old cars, fix them up, and enjoy them as much as so many of us older guys (and gals) do.

The boys' interest in the hobby at their ages is encouraging, even if the "old" cars P.D. and Warren may eventually own or restore will likely be vehicles of the '90s or later. I e-mailed their mom after that earlier exchange to ask what P.D. and Warren might find most interesting in a future "Collector Cars" column.

This column is about one of their suggestions - how the car tire and wheel have evolved over the years.
