Yes, you read the title correctly. Why emphasize incompetence instead of competence? In the history of considering culture in community mental health, we perhaps have learned best from our cultural blunders. I've certainly made my share. Since those who work in CMHCs generally are concerned with doing what is possible for the underserved, actually recognizing mistakes and feeling guilty about them can be a powerful motivator to do better. The number 13 is considered to be an unlucky number in mainstream America, but there are probably more than 13 ways to be culturally incompetent. Recent research shows that CMHCs are improving in cultural competence, but there is still a long way to go. (1)
