For the estimated one in five American adults who suffer from a diagnosable mental illness in a given year, (1,2) the recovery vision of hope, healing, and empowerment offers a new perspective on the challenges of mental illness. The President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health's final report and other analyses and commentaries during the past decade have raised awareness of the recovery perspective in behavioral healthcare service delivery. The final report set out two principles for successfully transforming U.S. mental health service delivery:

* Services and treatment must be consumer-and family-centered, geared to give individuals real and meaningful choices about treatment options and providers--not oriented to bureaucracies' requirements.

* Care must focus on increasing consumers' ability to successfully cope with life's challenges, on facilitating recovery, and on building resilience, not just on managing symptoms.

New standards from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Behavioral Health Care (CAMBHC) address this emerging recovery-oriented approach to working with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness.
