Article Excerpt Perinatal and postpartum depression are gaining recognition as major health concerns for women in their childbearing years. According to estimates in the literature, after delivery approximately 12% of women will develop a depressive illness. Unfortunately, half of all women with postpartum depression never receive treatment, with serious consequences for the mother's long-term mental health. Many of them will continue to suffer from depression six months postpartum, and 25% will remain depressed a year later. In addition, 20% will develop postpartum depression with subsequent pregnancies.
Postpartum depression has serious consequences for children, too. The disease affects a mother's quality of life and ability to function, which in turn affects her ability to care for her children. Studies show that mothers with postpartum depression are more likely to have negative attitudes toward their children, are less affectionate and responsive, and are more likely to physically abuse their infants. It is no surprise that research also has shown that these children have more behavioral problems, poorer cognitive test scores, and higher rates of medical office visits, hospitalizations, and prescription drug use.
Recognizing this as an issue, Magellan Health Services implemented two prevention programs to increase the identification, assessment, referral, and treatment of women at risk for postpartum depression. The company introduced its postpartum depression prevention program
in 1998 and, in 2000, added a combined perinatal and postpartum depression prevention program that targets both pregnant women and mothers who have just given birth.
