War pains: US troops returning from Iraq are paying a high price in the Bush Administration's war on terror, argues Richard Hil.

As the conflict in Iraq drags on deep into its third year, there is daily news of further US troop casualties. Since the start of the war in March 2003, over 1800 American troops have been killed and up to 38,000 injured, often seriously. Over recent months, US troops have participated with Iraqi forces in operations to counter anti-occupation groups in various towns and cities across the country. Many of these operations have involved intense and bloody clashes with 'foreign' fighters who have entered the country over the porous Syrian border.

Undoubtedly, the most traumatising exchanges have occurred in the streets and back alleys of some of Iraq's major population centres. It is here that young American soldiers--many recruited from the poorest parts of American society and made up disproportionately of Afro-Americans...
