New Start for the Western Sahara Peace Process

On 26 July 2005, a new UN envoy for Western Sahara was appointed. A former Dutch ambassador to the UN, Peter van Walsum, replaces former US elder statesman James Baker in this job. He has three months until the end of the present MINURSO (UN mission) mandate to come up with something. A hope for the Polisario rests in the fact that Van Walsum was chair of the Security Council in 1999 during East Timor's move towards independence.

The Two Parties: Morocco and the Saharawi Republic

Morocco is asking for a 'political solution within Moroccan sovereignty' (notwithstanding that it doesn't have sovereignty, because if it did, the case would not be on the books of the UN decolonisation committee). Morocco says it would give the Saharawis 'wide autonomy', but not foreign affairs, security or national identity. The Saharawi Republic wants a chance to hold the long-promised referendum of self-determination.
