Ever since Lauren Allen of Batavia was crowned Miss Illinois in June, she has racked up 11,000 miles on her car and spoken to about 7,000 students on how to avoid child predators.

But this past week has been a whirlwind of public appearances for the 21-year-old, who joined the 51 other contestants vying for the Miss America crown on Jan. 21.
