When Hibbett Neel was a fifth grader in the then sleepy town of Smyrna, Tenn., he and his younger brother, Roy, would wake up at 4:30 a.m. to start their daily paper route, delivering The Tennessean on bicycles. After school, the boys would retrace their steps delivering The Nashville Banner. They caught a break on Sundays, when there was only one home delivery required.
"Between that and sacking groceries in high school, our work experience taught us to be industrious," recalled Neel, with a laugh.
Born in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Neel grew up the eldest of three sons born to an accountant dad and a mother who was a nurse. Even though Smyrna was home to Confederate hero Sam Davis, Neel's great-great uncle, "nobody from Mississippi had heard of Smyrna until Nissan came around," he said.
