At the end of January, Danny Mitchell will head to Mobile, Ala., with his U.S. Tennis Association state champ senior league teammates for a chance to advance to national finals. Not bad for a man who was told by doctors a few years ago that he had brain cancer. But then again, Mitchell began life as a miracle baby.
A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mitchell was the only child of Benjamin Ferrell, a sheet metal mechanic for Pittsburgh Plate Glass' chemical division, and Mataline King, his homemaker wife who was in a horrific automobile accident when the U.S. Army couple was stationed in California.
"Mother wasn't supposed to be able to have any children because of the accident," he explained. "When she became pregnant, her doctor wanted to x-ray her because he said it couldn't possibly be a child. She wouldn't let him and I'm thankful for that."
