NHS Greater Glasgow runs a very successful smoking cessation scheme through community pharmacies, which culminated in it winning a QUIT award, explains Susan Carden
A unique pharmacy-led smoking cessation programme in Glasgow has attracted more than 26,000 clients since its launch three years ago.
Glasgow has an unenviable record in any smoking league table, with 41 per cent of adults lighting up, and in some areas this can be as high as 70 per cent. The aim of Starting Fresh is to develop a network of accredited community pharmacies across Greater Glasgow, offering an easily accessible, cost-effective service, with prescribing and dispensing of nicotine replacement therapy.
This is backed up with advice, support and information and also shifts the emphasis from GP prescribing of NRT to pharmacy prescribing of the products.
Starting Fresh was set up by NHS Greater Glasgow pharmacy public health department, and pharmacists and assistants were invited to take part on a locality basis.
It is supported by NHS Greater Glasgow's primary care division, Glasgow local medical committee, and the area pharmaceutical and drug and therapeutics committees, and supported financially by NHS Greater Glasgow.
