Peace Walker: The Legend of Hiawatha and Tekanawita is C.J. Taylor's tenth book, several of which have been about Native legends. Taylor is an artist and children's author of Mohawk heritage who lives near the Kahnawake reserve outside Montreal. Her version of the Hiawatha story is based on that told to her by Kahnawake elder Ronwaniente Jocks. Interspersed within the story, Taylor provides nine plates of her original acrylic on canvas artwork. These paintings are rich, dark, and vivid, and those that contain portraits are often modeled on current Kahnawake elders. Peace Walker is bracketed by brief historical chapters about the Iroquois confederacy which pre-dated European contact and which would inspire democratic precedents amongst white North Americans.
