Mudslides blocked highways in Lane County on Friday and shut down Interstate 5 at the California border for much of the day and through the night as strong Pacific storms continued to douse the region.

The forecast called for more rain today with a flood watch in effect until tonight for rivers along the Oregon Coast, the Cascade foothills and Cascades in Lane County, the Coast Range and elsewhere around the state.

A 16-year-old from Corvallis survived a plunge into the raging McKenzie River after he and his uncle went out in a canoe, according to an official with McKenzie Fire and Rescue. A bystander found the teen stumbling, shivering and incoherent at the Finn Rock takeout and took him to his home, where paramedics treated him. The uncle also escaped unharmed.

The Siuslaw River was flowing at 22 feet at Mapleton on Friday afternoon, more than 4 feet above its flood stage of 18 feet, and set to crest at 25 feet Friday night. Officials were keeping a close eye on the Mohawk River, which was at flood stage and still rising Friday night.
