Holidays require sensitivity

I have been living in Eugene since 1987. This is the first December I have felt comfortable being a minority here. I think it's because Hanukkah and Christmas are at the same time this year, and it seems I have vocal allies.

A few years ago it was so uncomfortable for me I took it out on a clerk at Meier & Frank. I had been shopping and at the end of the transaction, the nice lady said, "Merry Christmas."

I lost it. "Don't you know that not everyone celebrates Christmas," I said very loudly and angrily. She had taken the brunt of my hurt feelings. As soon as I got home I called this clerk and apologized. It wasn't her fault, and it was wrong to take it out on her.

Year after year I deal with the holiday issue at the work place. The hardest is when the discussion about holiday decorations occurs while Hanukkah is going on. The conversation goes something like this: "Well, we can deal with this when the holidays get closer." It hurts.

With all the talk this year about wishing people Merry Christmas, I actually have been OK with the wishes. I think it's because there are other people standing up for me, reminding people that not everyone celebrates Christmas and to be aware of this diversity.
