Usually heard breaking into otherwise calm radio or television broadcasts, it commanded immediate attention and set the stage for the next six words, "TO BRING YOU A NEWS BULLETIN!" Something significant in the world had just happened, and unlike today's instant-messaged society where everything on the planet is accessible in realtime, these words meant the wire services were reporting some sort of 'breaking news'- a natural catastrophe; death of a world leader; or in the case of this story, a plane crash. To be more accurate, that's actually 'an impending plane crash'.
