Energy price comparison website TheEnergyShop.com, today urged customers to put energy saving high on their list of New Year's resolutions for 2006. According to data from TheEnergyShop.com, residential gas bills have increased by 37% since the beginning of 2004 with electricity bills up by 26%. That has added GBP187 a year to the energy bills of the typical household. Across the UK population this amounts to an additional burden of GBP4 billion a year; equivalent to 15 times the net worth of Queen Elizabeth II.

Furthermore, with wholesale gas and electricity prices trading close to record highs certain energy suppliers are already warning that further prices increases are "inevitable" in 2006. This could push the average household annual energy bill above GBP800 a year, compared to just GBP585 a year in January 2004.
