...to the beautiful town of Galle at the island nation's southern tip. I was so intent on enjoying this vacation that I did not mind that my traveling companion and I were delayed during our trip to Galle. Little did I know at the time that the minor delay, maybe ten minutes, saved our lives!
As you may remember, December 26, 2004, was the date that a devastating tsunami ravaged much of Southeast Asia, leaving in its wake unimaginable panic and devastation. As we drove south along the coast that morning, we noticed minor flooding caused by the first wave that forced local police to close the road to Galle, making our bus driver alter our route toward higher ground.
