NEW YORK -- Consumers of copper-based products are gagging on the energy surcharges they're being pressed to swallow by nearly all major U.S. copper producers.

The swift implementation of surcharges by tube, rod and sheet producers did not give many consumers time to prepare. Few have been able to resist the surcharges or pass them along in the form of higher prices for their finished products.

Questions have also been raised over the calculations being used by companies to formulate the surcharges.
