PITTSBURGH -- The United Steelworkers union sees an opportunity to gain a foothold in Dofasco Inc.'s operations if the Canadian company is acquired by Germany's ThyssenKrupp AG.

The USW does not currently represent any workers at the Hamilton, Ontario,-based steelmaker, but it hopes to, according to Wayne Fraser, USW Ontario/Atlantic director. Only workers at several subsidiaries and at recently acquired Quebec Cartier Mining Co., Port Cartier, Quebec, have union representation.
