Head coaches in today's NFL are not the ones who do all the dirty work.

It's their assistants, naturally, who toil in the trenches and help their teams reach higher ground.

While every playoff-bound team boasts a few assistants who deserve credit for some of their success, here's a closer look at NFL assistants from the Bears, Cincinnati and Indianapolis who stand out from the crowd and have helped their teams show remarkable improvement.

Rivera factor

Bears coach Lovie Smith may be a bit of an exception, because he is so involved with the Cover-2 defense that represents a big part of the team's success. But even with his involvement, the defense is under the firm hand of Ron Rivera.
