These volumes are a contribution to the history of the papacy. Of the 265 popes who are chronologically listed, 46 are highlighted in individual essays by 48 authors, nine of whom are women.

The opus is divided into five parts:

1. The Early Papacy, from Peter through Pelagius II (590 AD), seven popes

2. The Medieval Papacy, from Gregory I through Boniface VIII (1301), eight: popes

3. The Renaissance and Reformation Papacy, from Benedict XI through Pius IV (1565), eleven popes

4. The Early Modern Papacy, from Pius V through Clement XIV (1774), ten popes

5. The Modern Papacy, from Pius VI through John Paul II (2005), ten popes

Each part is preceded by an introduction and followed by a bibliography; in addition, every individual pope's biography has an attached Selected Bibliography.
