JULY 6: SIMON & GARFUNKEL
The on-again, off-again folk rock duo is most certainly on again. After a much lauded acoustic rendition of Sounds of Silence at the 2003 Grammys, S&G launched the aptly titled Old Friends tour last fall. By year's end, the reunion showcase had seen ticket sales swell above the $50 million mark, which meant more concert dates and more time to finally put that troubled water under the bridge once and for all. The Paramount Theatre brings a bit more structure to its annual summer of film. Tuesdays will be dedicated to foreign classics, Wednesdays to the great comedians, and Sundays to epics. CONGRESS AVE BRIDGE BAT COLONY
Beneath this heavily trafficked span, the largest urban bat colony in North America makes its home from March thru November. Evenings from late July thru early September are ideal for witnessing the 1.5 million or so Mexican free-tailed bats as they take off to hunt for their dinner. The east side of the bridge and the grassy area adjacent to the Austin American-Statesman parking lot are popular viewing areas. Bat experts are available to answer questions Thur-Sun thru Aug.
