...on the fateful night when he made silly and hurtful remark about the wife of the recently retired premier and then, it is alleged, propositioned more or less seriously a couple of female journalists, he had had too much to drink and made a fool of himself. But far too much was made of this, and the motives for its sudden prominence in the media are really what are worthy of analysis.

Of course Brogden should not have behaved as he did. But what was so terrible about it? The remark about Bob Carr might just have been a general insult to Asian women who have married Australian men, whether as the result of a normal encounter (as with the Carrs) or of an arranged marriage by correspondence and contract as in the case of the real "mail order" brides. If that be the case, then many Australian women have been guilty of casting similar aspersions on unions which have often enough been successful and happy--nothing limits the insults which an Australian feminist will heap upon a man who decides he prefers women of different origins and prejudices. It is easy enough for a foolish male to pick up such insults. Or it could have been some kind of code implying that since the Carts are childless there must be something wrong with them, perhaps some deficiency in Mr Carr's sexual orientation. Such baseless insults are all too common amongst the worthless guttersnipes who feed on the political process. Whatever its intent, it is really too trivial to be worthy of notice, except in a minor way as reflecting on Brogden's shallowness.

The supposed approaches to the female journalists are equally trivial. Neither of the women was moving in sheltered circles, and to think that any female journalist who is remotely attractive lacks in propositions is to forget about the nature of...
