Some 42 million children in South Asia are still out of primary schools despite developments in the education sector. East Asia and the Pacific seem to be on their way to achieving universal education, but less populous countries like Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar and Laos PDR still have a long way to go. Narrowing the gender gap in the primary education levels has been largely achieved in East Asia and the Pacific, but the difference between boys' and girls' enrolment remains unacceptably wide in South Asia, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal.
