Most people have a hazy recollection of their first day at college. Not so for Tanya Zakharova.

The inauspicious day is indelibly marked in her memory as wen as millions of other Russians. Her first day at Moscow State University was Aug. 19, 1991. Of little consequence to most Americans, the date was the start of an ill-fated coup by hard-line Communists looking to overthrow President Mikhail Gorbachev.

As was indicative of previous actions taken by the government concerning bad news. the state-controlled television stations went into no-news is good-news mode.
