Vernon Hoffman

Vernon A. Hoffman of Eugene died Nov. 24 of age-related causes. He was 89.

Hoffman was born April 11, 1916, in Hillsboro to Joseph and Sarah Boldrick Hoffman. He married Jeanne Mahoney on July 24, 1937, in Vancouver, Wash. She died Oct. 16, 1963. He married Alice Lyle on June 4, 1966, in Carson City, Nev. They later divorced.

A Eugene resident for more than 70 years, Hoffman attended the University of Oregon. He owned and operated the family jewelry business, Hoffman's Jewelers. He enjoyed hiking and skiing, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Michael of Eugene; a daughter, Sylvia Bentley of Arlington, Va.; and one grandchild.

Inurnment will be private. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Peckels

The funeral will be held Dec. 2 for Elizabeth Jane Peckels of Eugene, who died Nov. 26 of age-related causes. She was 85.

Peckels was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Duluth, Minn., to Hiram and Florence Wiese Gordon. She married Lawrence Peckels on Sept. 30, 1938, in Virginia, Minn. He died Aug. 28, 2002.

She graduated from high school and attended two years of college, all in Virginia, Minn. She also lived in Duluth and in Grand Coulee, Wash., before moving to Eugene in the late 1940s.

Peckels was a homemaker and also provided foster care to 42 children. She enjoyed caregiving, swimming, camping, shopping, baking and going to church. She belonged to Irving Christian Church, the Rebekah Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Ladies' Moose Lodge.

Survivors include three sons, Jon, Dick and Jody, all of Eugene; four daughters, Sue Sink and Kay Knight, both of Eugene, Patty Holmes of Gresham and Lori Patrick of Reno, Nev.; 19 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Jean Peckels, died in 1960 and a grandchild also died previously.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at West Lawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home.

Friday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at Irving Christian Church in Eugene.

Sarah Durham

A memorial service will be held Dec. 4 for Sarah Jane Durham of Eugene, who died Nov. 21 of age-related causes. She was 81.

Durham was born March 19, 1924, in Coyle, Okla., to Chesney and Bessie Lucas Stewart. She married Harold Durham on June 5, 1948, in Pasadena, Calif.

A Eugene resident for 55 years, she worked as a beautician. She also was employed in a crisis shelter home for Children's Services Division for four years and in special procedures at Sacred Heart Hospital for 13 years. She was a seamstress and also enjoyed making dolls, baking and travel. She belonged to Neighborhood Assembly of God Church.
