CORRECTION (ran 12/1/2005): John Warren was the University of Oregon track coach in the 1948 season, between the retirement of Bill Hayward and the hiring of Bill Bowerman. Ron Bellamy's column on Page B1 Wednesday incorrectly stated that Bowerman succeeded Hayward directly.
