Careful not to make any promises, Eugene's leaders Monday night gave the city manager permission to begin working with McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center executives on an agreement that could lead to an application for a hospital in north Eugene.

The Eugene City Council voted 6-1 to direct City Manager Dennis Taylor to start working on a so-called memorandum of understanding with McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. The Springfield hospital and its majority owner, Triad Hospitals Inc., want to build a hospital on more than half of what is now RiverRidge Golf Course, north of the Belt Line Road and Delta Highway interchange.
