Lane County isn't a retirement mecca, a recreation hot spot or a suburban bedroom for the state's metropolis.
And that may explain why its population growth, at just under 1 percent for the year, is no match for the surging numbers in Central and Southern Oregon and the Portland metro area.
Lane County added 2,735 residents in the past year, reaching an estimated population of 336,085, according to newly released estimates from the Population Research Center at Portland State University.
Oregon as a whole added 46,100 new residents, as in-migration and births outnumbered deaths and out-migration. That annual growth followed a pace that saw Oregon expand from 3,421,399 in 2000 to its most recent estimated population of 3,628,700.
