It's the noon hour on the University of

Oregon campus, and Dennis "Whitey" Lueck is in his element: outdoors, talking about trees.

With engaging enthusiasm, Lueck beguiles 16 university library employees with stories about a native incense cedar over here, a "near native" coast redwood over there and a non-native oriental persimmon in between.

Who knew that the leaves of an Oregon myrtle can substitute for the laurel in your spaghetti dinner's tomato sauce? That sharpening a pencil is an ideal way to enjoy the distinctive scent of cedar? That the ubiquitous Douglas fir barely existed in these parts 10,000 years ago?

Lueck does.

The man is so closely associated with trees - earned by leading hundreds of walking tours and field classes since arriving in Eugene 22 years ago - that many know him as simply "The Tree Guy."

But like a tree's sap and roots hidden within and below, Lueck offers much greater complexity than what's visible on the surface.

Yes, he's the guy who helped found the Eugene Tree Foundation and the NeighorWoods tree-planting program. But he's also a guy who is fluent in four languages, has never owned an automobile and lives in a small but fanciful home that he shares with three chickens named Nasturtium, Oleander and Poppy.
