Dan Grunfeld is a senior at Stanford, a 6-foot-6 guard for the Cardinal basketball team with a sweet shot, a few moves to the basket and feel for the game. And he wants to play in the NBA, just like dad.
Dad is Ernie Grunfeld, once a solid pro and now president of basketball operations for the Wizards. Could it happen, Dan Grunfeld playing for his old man's team? Would it happen, if he was deemed good enough?
"Absolutely," Ernie Grunfeld said. "Absolutely, if he was a player available to us. [Because of] his shooting and knowledge of the game. Why not?"
Well, there would be questions about favoritism, if not nepotism, and even more comparisons than they already have withstood. Before earning a reputation as a shrewd executive, Ernie Grunfeld was a terrific college player at Tennessee and had a productive, nine-year NBA career.
Forget all that, Grunfeld said. He is out to build a contender, family ties or not. And the two of them came to grips long...
