Willowbrook faced a tall order trying to stay with Downers Grove South.

The short Warriors hung close in the first half, but Downers South's height and talent took full effect in the second half.

After intermission the Mustangs quickly turned a tight game into a rout on their way to a 62-39 win over host Willowbrook in a West Suburban Gold girls basketball opener Tuesday night in Villa Park.

Downers South (5-0, 1-0) held a 32-29 edge at halftime, then scored the first 9 points in the third quarter. That triggered a 17-2 run that produced a 49-31 lead.

Willowbrook's feisty first half made Downers South coach Ellen O'Brien a little nervous, but she remained confident in her team. She instructed the Mustangs to be more aggressive in the second half.

"This is a much better team than we've had in a long time," O'Brien said. "They're confident. They do have poise. They're able to finish. They just had to make some minor adjustments."

The Mustangs wound up outscoring Willowbrook (4-2, 0-1) 30-10 in the second half powered by 6-foot-3 senior Shannon Finnegan. The Loyola-bound center made all 8 of her field-goal attempts in the second half when she scored 17 of her season-high 19 points.

"I came out a little slow in the first half obviously," Finnegan said. "I got really excited the second half because this is a game we should win and we want to be conference champions."

Downers South's backcourt of Kelly Rice and Taylor Tondelli finished with 16 and 10 points, respectively, and impressed Willowbrook coach Troy Nelson in the process.

"I thought their guards were the key tonight," Nelson said.
