Elk Grove used Hot Hand Luke and a lot of determination to escape its early season struggles Tuesday night.

Versatile senior Luke Miller didn't miss a shot en route to a game-high 17 points as the Grenadiers (2-3) had the edge in almost every area in a 52-39 Mid-Suburban League boys basketball crossover victory at Palatine (2-3).

"This is where we should compete on a regular basis," Miller said after hitting his 7 shots from the field and 2 free throws. "Coming off the Mitchell Thanksgiving Tournament (at Fenton) we felt a little sluggish and it was a wakeup call.

"These are the teams we need to compete with and turn it up a notch. We did tonight and I'm proud of the way we played."

Miller's 6 rebounds and 5 from sophomore Billy Hubly led the Grenadiers to a 22-15 edge. Hubly (10 points) was also 4-for-5 from the field with a pair of 3s as they shot 62.9 percent (22-for-35) overall and 73.3 percent (11-for-15) after halftime.
