At the 10th anniversary of NAFTA, the trade agreement has had a positive impact on activity at Port Bienville, located in southwestern Hancock County.

One Mississippi business that has been favorably impacted by NAFTA is Linea Peninsular, a steamship line based at the port, running four lines per week to the Yucatan Peninsula.

"Basically NAFTA has been good for us," said Capt. David Humphreys, president and owner of Linea Peninsular. "That is for sure. What we are concerned about, like everyone else, is what the effect is going to be in 2005 when quotas are dropped. The WTO has said quotas are to be eliminated worldwide. What is going to be the impact? Is some of this business going to China? How that is going to impact our business we are not really sure. We are hoping the dropping of quotas won't make a lot of difference because of the frequently of our service."

You might think goods from Mexico would have an advantage over China because of shipping costs. But Humphreys said enormous ships that can carry 8,500 containers can make unit costs of shipments from China very low....
