Southwest Airlines announced a profitable second quarter yesterday at a time when soaring jet fuel prices and stiff competition are hurting other major airlines severely.

Adding to their financial woes is a new fare war for late summer and fall travel that is saving money for passengers, but driving some major airlines closer to failure.

"A lot of these fares they can't make money on," said Michael Boyd, an airline industry consultant in Evergreen, Colo. "Everybody's going to lose money on this."
