Katrina closes three Starwood hotels in New Orleans.

The catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina continue to be felt all the way to Westchester County.

White Plains-based Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. (NYSE:HOT) has three hotels in downtown New Orleans: The Sheraton New Orleans, the W New Orleans and the W French Quarter.

"Thankfully, all of the 1,500 guests and employees at these hotels were safely evacuated to other properties in nearby Texas," said Ellen Gallo of Starwoods.

In fact, the recovery process at one of the hotels, the Sheraton New Orleans, was continuing at a "good pace." As of Sept. 9, this property was no longer powered by generators, but was back online with its electricity from the city's power grid. Glass was being removed from its damaged areas and trucks had arrived, bringing clean bed linens. The hotel had been made secure from vandals and was being used by emergency rescuers and hotel contractors during the city's recovery efforts.
