Carbide circular saws vs. band saws: how do they measure up?

Of all the machines used to cut metal, band saws and circular blade cold saws dominate the market. Though saws amount to only about 2 percent of the machine tool sector, numerous vendors offer products--mainly band saws--to service centers and other processors and fabricators.

Circular blade saws, often called cold saws, use high-strength steel solid or segmental circular blades with carbide or cermet tips. (Cermet is a strong alloy combining a heat-resistant compound such as titanium carbide or titanium nitride with a carbide metal binder.)
