Tammy Haughey credits her ascent up the ladder at Di Zinno Thompson advertising to being at the right desk at the right time.

After a brief stint as a management trainee for Enterprise Rent-a-Car--her first job out of college--Haughey landed an internship at the agency in 1991, which would expand, shrink and rebound in size following the ups and downs of the pre- and post-Sept. 11 economy.

As one of seven employees in the firm's then-cramped quarters, she was given a desk outside co-owner Tom Di Zinno's office.

"It was a bit intimidating at first, but it was a good thing because I got to know him pretty well pretty quickly," she said.

Promoted to account manager, account supervisor, director of client services, senior business strategist, general manager--a position she held from 2000-04--she became the firm's president in late May.
