The roadway to becoming an independent entrepreneur can have some mighty interesting turns, straight-aways and potholes along the route to success. Imagine one day sitting in the pilot's seat in the cabin of a huge jet airplane working for a national airline company living the dream of a lifetime, then 9/11 happens.

Almost overnight, passenger insecurity about flying turns a thriving market force enterprise into a pink slip.

"I had actually started my business, Southern Outdoor Technologies, back in 1999. My eventual furlough from the airlines caused me to more fully dedicate my efforts to make this idea an even more serious business venture," says owner Mark Bernegger of West Point. "I knew the product would sell. I just had to expand the market.
