He'd been a singer since grade school, performing at PTA meetings, for local service clubs and other special events. When Elvis Presley burst onto the scene, Larry DeRieux took off his acoustic guitar, strapped on a Fender and turned to rock 'n' roll.

In 1959, he gathered some backup musicians from the University of Oregon and headed to Arco Studios at Seventh Avenue and Blair Boulevard.

"Starting in March and ending in June, we rehearsed in that studio beaucoup times," said DeRieux, now 68 and living in Eugene.

They were working on a song DeRieux wrote called "Darlene Darlene." After the band recorded the tune and called it a day, the studio manager came to DeRieux and told him they couldn't send the track to Capitol Records, the company that was going to print the 45. They hadn't recorded a flip side....
