Article Excerpt Byline: Mark Baker The Register-Guard
Duffy's is long gone, and so is Guido's, but the spirit of what was once a red-brick building at the corner of East 13th Avenue and Alder Street on the University of Oregon campus is still alive.
It's alive in the memories of the many UO students who frequented what was once a tavern with bad lighting and pool tables and plenty of nachos and beer; where, what else, a Starbucks sits on the corner today.
Saturday is the UO's Homecoming game against the University of California. And even if Homecoming isn't quite the tradition it used to be and only a smidgen of the UO's 155,000 alumni come back for it, we were nonetheless feeling a bit sentimental about it all. They miss statues and tailgate parties and "liquid sunshine." They miss "old hippies" and Monster cookies and running on a certain trail.
They even miss chalk - if it's on a professor's sweater. They miss brick buildings and tofu and, ahem, making whoopee on parade floats. And, of course, they miss a certain "Fishbowl."
Here are some of the e-mails we received:
"I miss the 'Old' Taylor's, the bookstore, the 'Fishbowl' and the campus ... I love the place!
- Milton Seligman,
Pittsburgh, class of 1968
"I miss Wendy Ray and his great radio coverage of the Ducks on the old KUGN. I'll never forget the game against...
