Youngest one misses out

Our sixth and youngest child is a Sheldon High School freshman this year. She's a cheerleader, track athlete and an excellent student. Our other children have all graduated from Sheldon. All have known and competed against other student-athletes from the Eugene-Springfield area for years, many since the first grade.

What a tragedy my youngest daughter won't have that same opportunity going forward. She'll now also have to more strongly consider the trade-offs between extended travel for sporting activities and performance in her difficult International High School classes.

Certainly we'll now have significantly less opportunity to see her perform. The trip to Roseburg, Medford or Grants Pass is too lengthy for working parents to make during the week on any sort of regular basis. We'll miss being present, but she'll miss our presence more.

Personally, I'm so glad we have just three years ahead of us in this regard. Unfortunately these are three of the most important years in our daughter's life. Just picture having to travel from a sizable metropolitan area for up to three hours or more to play league games!

I was a three-sport athlete at Beaverton High School in the mid-1970s. A redistricting such as this would have been akin to Beaverton teams regularly traveling to Eugene, Bend or the coast to compete.

In fact, it might have been easier had Sheldon and South Eugene high schools been added to the Metro League in Beaverton ... it's closer! The OSAA should be ashamed of this redistricting decision!
