Poor Leon Skiles.

Eugene's mayor and City Council last Wednesday were antsy, waiting for the Oregon Department of Transportation's consultant from Portland to finish talking about the status of the West Eugene Parkway.

"I hate to interrupt you, but we need to move this along," Mayor Kitty Piercy said.

At that point, the mayor and councilors only had about a half-hour to decide what was uppermost on their minds: whether to continue the city's support for the long-planned and highly controversial roadway.

Urged on, Skiles hurriedly wrapped up his presentation in the crowded meeting room at City Hall.

Then the debate on the evenly divided council broke out.
