By and large, the jury in the corruption trial of former Gov. George Ryan is a serious bunch.

They sat poker-faced when key witness Scott Fawell - once among the most politically powerful men in the state when he served as Ryan's chief of staff in the secretary of state's office - made wisecracks on the witness stand. And if jurors felt sorry for him when he cried, they didn't show it.

That is not to say they were uninterested. On the contrary, they paid rapt attention. For example, when defense attorneys handed out a slightly different draft of an exhibit they had posted on the courtroom projector screen, a juror caught the difference within the hour and reported it to the judge.

And what they think about Fawell's testimony may be key to whether Ryan, 71, and co-defendant lobbyist Larry Warner, 67, will be found guilty or innocent of the combined 22 charges of racketeering, mail and tax fraud, extortion and perjury against them.
