Halloween is not a holiday for dentists or dietitians.

All those gooey, sticky, sweet, crunchy, chocolatey treats have them hollering dire edicts like "Moderation!" and "Brush immediately!"

But all our favorite treats are not equally devilish.

Any candy worthy of the name is loaded with plenty of sugar. Bacteria in your mouth metabolize the sugar and convert it into acid, which eats the enamel of your teeth and causes cavities.

The longer the sugar sits around, the greater the chance it will lead to tooth decay. That makes sweets that stick to your teeth - caramels, Tootsie rolls - and long-lasting hard candies more dangerous than melt-in-your mouth chocolates, says Dr. Douglas Janis, a pediatric dentist in Geneva.
