There's no escaping it: You can feel it in the air; you can see it in the pounds of catalogs cramming your mailbox. The holidays are coming.

Bernadine Rosenthal, like everyone else, is trying to get ready for them. In the past that meant cooking a big Thanksgiving/birthday dinner topped off with a big whipped cream cake for her husband, Melvin. These days the holidays hold little joy, but rather are touchstones of her loss, marking the two-year anniversary of Melvin's death.

For Rosenthal, like nearly all others who have experienced the death of a loved one, getting ready for the approaching holidays means preparing for painful and poignant reminders of her loss.

"The day is going to come, and the day is going to go. It's how you handle it that's important," Rosenthal noted....
