Ways Schaumburg could be even cooler

To the editor: The Sierra Club recently tagged Schaumburg as one of the USA's "coolest cities" because of its environmental efforts. Here are some ways I think Schaumburg could be even cooler.

Environmentally, Schaumburg would be cooler if second-hand smoke was minimized. Local ordinances need updating to protect Schaumburg citizens from the 250 toxic or cancer-causing chemicals identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as associated with inhaling someone else's smoke.

At a Coffee with the Council last June, village trustees responded to me that no action would be taken anytime soon to restrict indoor smoking, though one trustee acknowledged that more restrictions are "just a matter of time." Why wait? The health evidence is so compelling. The village board need not follow Chicago and further restrict smoking just within its borders. It can lead collaboration with other communities for a regional ban or lobby state legislators to join several other states that have a statewide ban.

Gastronomically, Schaumburg would be cooler if Trader Joes and/or Whole Foods Market opened here. A great location would be the vacating Homemakers site by Woodfield....
